A 71-years old gentleman wrote to me: “Teresa, I need your help. How do I make money on the web?”.

What an interesting and classical question!

First of all I was very excited about this gentleman, as I have a huge respect on persons at his age who (want to) do business on the web! Then I did some research about his current business, which (I assume) is not doing well.

This gentleman has a profile on one social network, he is an affiliate of e-shopping mall, has about 40 “friends” on his network.

How can I help him? What advice can I give him?

There are two basic rules I would recommend him to do: Be Different. Be Visible.

Be Different.

How to be different on the web? It’s easy. It’s called domain name.

One of the easiest ways to start earning income on the web is participating in an affiliate program. You can start your own business with small investment. As an affiliate you get your affiliate link, which you can promote on the web.

Now, how can you be different than other affiliates? GET YOUR OWN DOMAIN NAME. Currently you can register your own domain name for about $10/year. This is an investment, that every serious affiliate should make.

Many TLDs (Top Level Domain) are already taken and you have to remember to  respect trade mark rights when you register your domain name. I checked at DomainTess what kind of TLDs are still available for “onlineshop” and “onlinestore”. Here are some examples (as per December 7^th, 2008):

Be Visible – Search Engines.

You MUST BE visible on the web. Otherweis nobody will find your business! You can get visibility on the web for your domain name with some basic steps.

The easiest way :

Many domain providers (like DomainTess) offer many free extras like email, blog, hosting, forwarding. You can “forward” and “mask” your domain to your affiliate link. In this case you must remember to use “Title”, “Description” and “Tags”. Search engines like Google automatically searches for these details and you will be visible on the search engines. It can take up to 120 days before search engine “robots” will find you.
